Every year, the State Fair of Texas comes to Dallas with more Bix Tex energy and deep-fried excitement than ever before. As soon as you step onto the fairgrounds, it feels like one big Texas family reunion!

It always feels impossible to get enough of the nostalgic sights, sounds, and experiences, but if you’re anything like me, you’ll still spend the whole day trying.

Here’s your guide to the State Fair of Texas:

A Brief History of the State Fair of Texas

The State Fair of Texas has been around since 1886, growing into one of the oldest and most beloved traditions in the United States. Held annually at Fair Park in Dallas, it offers family-friendly attractions and exhibits that attract millions of people each year.

Whether you’re trying new foods and drinks, watching shows, or playing games, the Texas State Fair has something for everyone.

Get a Warm Welcome From Big Tex

Standing 55 feet tall, Big Tex is a giant cowboy who has been a symbol of the Fair since 1952. Before that, he stood as a huge Santa Claus in a small Texas town called Corsicana until he bought it for $750 and moved to Dallas.

Dressed in custom clothes from Williamson-Dickie, Big Tex has a 95-gallon cowboy hat and size 96 boots, welcoming millions of visitors every year with a loud, “Howdy, Folks!”

  • What to Try: You only get Texas State Fair food once a year, so don’t miss out on classics like Fletcher’s original corny dogs, turkey legs, funnel cakes, and cotton candy. Fair food is notorious for being unusual, usually with a deep-fried or Southern twist. This year, you can try a Lays Potato Chip Drink, Cotton Candy Bacon on a Stick, Cookie Butter Nachos, Fat Bacon Pickle Fires, and more.
  • Taste Test: In 2023, my husband and I tried the Thanksgiving dinner—a fried ball with turkey, creamed corn, and stuffing paired with gravy and cranberry dipping sauces. It was tasty!
  • Pricing: The Texas State Fair may be pricey, but considering the foods are unique and only happen once a year, it’s worth it.

State Fair Attractions and Rides

  • Overview: The State Fair of Texas has over 70 rides and attractions for every age group and thrill level on the Midway. Enjoy slower rides like the carousel and Texas Skyway or daring attractions like the Slingshot and Crazy Mouse coaster.
  • Experience: It’s my husband and I’s tradition to ride the iconic Texas State Ferris Wheel each year, which gives us an incredible view of Dallas and the fairgrounds. My husband manages to push past his fear of heights for the Ferris Wheel but not for the Slingshot, one of my favorite rides. You never know when it’ll launch, and when it does, you’re catapulted into the air at over 60mph. We also love playing all the games, especially the “Watergun” one.

Entertainment

  • Live Shows: The State Fair of Texas hosts large concerts and shows on the Chevrolet Main Stage, featuring artists like Ludacris, Christina Aguilera, and the Jonas Brothers. The McDonald’s Amphitheater is where you can listen to local bands and see magic, comedy, and puppet shows.
  • Special Events: One of the highlights of the Fair is the Big Tex Choice Awards, where people submit creative foods and drinks in a competition for prizes. In the Livestock Birthing Barn, you can see the birth of farm animals like sheep, cows, and horses. The TX vs. OU Red River Showdown at the Cotton Bowl and the Rodeo at the Coliseum also always draw large crowds.

Some of the items you’ll find include handmade jewelry and soap, Texas-themed clothes, homemade food, and even farm equipment, mattresses, kitchen tools, and handbags.

  • Additional Costs: While the entry fee covers a lot, you’ll pay extra for Texas State Fair food, rides, and souvenirs.
  • Deals and Discounts: The fair offers discounts and deals at various times, which you can find on their website. Some grocery stores offer discounted tickets, or you can bring canned food for a reduced rate. Combo packages and season passes are also available for more savings.
