Autumn at the Arboretum 2025: ¡Mundo México! – A Celebration of Culture, Art & 110,000 Pumpkins

AUTUMN AT THE ARBORETUM: ¡MUNDO MÉXICO!

Every fall, Dallas transforms into a wonderland of pumpkins, color, and creativity — and Autumn at the Arboretum has long been at the heart of it all. For the past 19 years, this beloved tradition has drawn over one million visitors annually, marking the start of sweater weather and family fun in North Texas.

This year’s festival, ¡Mundo México!, presented by Reliant, takes the experience to dazzling new heights. Running September 20 through November 2, 2025, the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden celebrates Mexican art, heritage, and ecology with a spectacular display featuring 110,000 pumpkins, gourds, and squash arranged into stunning works of horticultural and cultural storytelling.

A Global Twist on a Dallas Tradition

While the Pumpkin Village is a signature fall attraction for Dallas families, 2025’s edition transforms the space into a vibrant homage to Mexico’s landscapes, artistry, and traditions.

As Sabina Carr, president and CEO of the Dallas Arboretum, explains:

“With ¡Mundo México!, we’re expanding what seasonal programming can be — combining art, culture and education in ways that resonate across generations.”

This bold reimagining brings together international artists, local educators, and community partners to create an experience that is equal parts celebration, learning, and inspiration.

Pumpkin Village: A Journey Through Mexico

The star of the festival — the Pumpkin Village — has never looked more extraordinary. This year, it features seven architecturally inspired pumpkin houses, each representing a different region of Mexico and its artistic legacy:

  • Casa Calabaza Azul: A colorful homage to Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul in Mexico City, celebrating art, creativity, and cultural pride.
  • Templo de Kukulkán: A pumpkin-covered stepped pyramid inspired by Chichén Itzá, honoring ancient Maya wisdom.
  • Casa de Flores Wixárika: Vivid floral patterns made of pumpkins echo the intricate Huichol beadwork from Jalisco and surrounding regions.
  • Casa Monarca: A bright tribute to the monarch butterfly migration, with orange pumpkins and butterfly wings symbolizing Michoacán’s Oyamel forests.
  • Casa del Zócalo: A festive pumpkin house inspired by Mexico City’s central square, adorned with papel picado and a handcrafted piñata.
  • Casa Zapoteca: Showcasing Oaxacan heritage through diamond-patterned pumpkin walls, marigold garlands, and Barro Negro ceramics.
  • Casa de Saltillo: A rustic tribute to Coahuila and Puebla, decorated with Talavera tiles and colorful serape fabrics.

These whimsical creations turn the Arboretum into an open-air museum where visitors can explore, snap photos, and learn about the artistry and symbolism behind each design.

Cielo Tejido: A Canopy of Culture and Craft

Above the Pumpkin Village, an awe-inspiring installation called Cielo Tejido (“Woven Sky”) transforms the pathway into a kaleidoscope of color. Created by a renowned artist collective from Etzatlán, Jalisco, this massive canopy of hand-crocheted hexagons is a breathtaking tribute to Mexican textile traditions.

By the Numbers:

  • 1,188 hand-crocheted hexagons
  • 180 miles of thread used
  • 3,500+ hours of craftsmanship
  • 396 square meters covered (larger than a tennis court!)
  • Weighs just 350 pounds

As sunlight filters through the vivid patterns, Cielo Tejido invites visitors to look up and reflect on how culture and craft intertwine — literally weaving together generations of creativity and connection.

Spirit Guides: Fantastical Oaxacan Sculptures

The cultural heart of ¡Mundo México! lies in the Spirit Guides: Fantastical Creatures exhibit by world-renowned Oaxacan artists Jacobo and María Ángeles.

These eight monumental sculptures, on loan from the Denver Botanic Gardens, depict mythological animal guardians known as tona and nahual — beings that guide humans based on their birth and character. Crafted from wood and painted in vivid detail, each figure embodies centuries of Zapotec cosmology and craftsmanship.

“Each person is born with a protector — a spirit animal that shares their soul,” explain the artists. “Through these creatures, we blend ancestral wisdom with imagination and color.”

This installation represents a rare opportunity for Dallas audiences to experience authentic contemporary Mexican art in a botanical setting — where nature and imagination converge.

Cultural Programming & Family Experiences

Beyond the visual splendor, ¡Mundo México! offers robust cultural programming designed to educate, inspire, and connect.

Educational Reach

  • Over 20,000 students are expected to participate in field trips with bilingual guides, learning stations, and classroom toolkits.
  • Programming connects science, art, and social studies through lessons on Mexican biodiversity, migration, and indigenous agriculture.
  • Bilingual signage and STEM-aligned activities make it accessible and educational for children of all ages.

Botanical Connections

The Arboretum highlights the ecological bonds between Texas and Mexico, showcasing shared native species like agave and cactus, along with milpa plantings (corn, beans, and squash) that illustrate sustainable indigenous farming practices.

“Our region’s biodiversity doesn’t recognize boundaries,” says Dustin Miller, vice president of programs and learning. “This festival celebrates the natural and cultural connections that unite us.”
